On the Hourglass Model

چکیده
The Hourglass Model The hourglass model of layered systems architecture [1] is a visual and conceptual representation of an approach to achieving a design that supports a great diversity of applications and admits a great diversity of implementations. At the center of the hourglass model is a distinguished layer in a stack of abstractions that is chosen as the sole means of accessing the resources of the system. This distinguished layer can be given implementations using components which are thought of as lying below it in the stack. The distinguished layer can be used to implement other services and applications that are thought of as lying above it. However, the components that lie above the distinguished layer cannot make direct access to the services that lie below it. The distinguished layer was called the “spanning layer” by Clark because it bridges the multiple implementation layers below it in the stack [2].

An explanatory evo-devo model for the developmental hourglass
The "developmental hourglass'' describes a pattern of increasing morphological divergence towards earlier and later embryonic development, separated by a period of significant conservation across distant species (the "phylotypic stage''). Recent studies have found evidence in support of the hourglass effect at the genomic level. For instance, the phylotypic stage expresses the oldest and most c...
متن کاملThe hourglass effect in hierarchical dependency networks
Many hierarchically modular systems are structured in a way that resembles an hourglass. This “hourglass effect” means that the system generates many outputs from many inputs through a relatively small number of intermediate modules that are critical for the operation of the entire system, referred to as the waist of the hourglass. We investigate the hourglass effect in general, not necessarily...
متن کاملPost-embryonic Hourglass Patterns Mark Ontogenetic Transitions in Plant Development
The historic developmental hourglass concept depicts the convergence of animal embryos to a common form during the phylotypic period. Recently, it has been shown that a transcriptomic hourglass is associated with this morphological pattern, consistent with the idea of underlying selective constraints due to intense molecular interactions during body plan establishment. Although plants do not ex...
متن کاملA ricle Evidence for Active Maintenance of Phylotranscriptomic Hourglass Patterns in Animal and Plant Embryogenesis
The developmental hourglass model has been used to describe the morphological transitions of related species throughout embryogenesis. Recently, quantifiable approaches combining transcriptomic and evolutionary information provided novel evidence for the presence of a phylotranscriptomic hourglass pattern across kingdoms. As its biological function is unknown it remains speculative whether this...
